I will evaluate the authenticity and application of students’ real-world understandings in the project rubric, which will assess (and allow students the opportunity to self-assess) their ability to empathize with someone living in a different place/time period from their own. This rubric will assess students’ understanding of the core content, but also future-focused success skills such as creativity, originality, and innovation within the design of the green screen project, as well as the aspects of communication associated with the presentation piece. This will allow me to evaluate whether students were truly able to take on a perspective aside from their own, create an authentic product, and present it effectively. I can compare my students’ scores on the rubric with other fourth graders and past students of mine to see if the incorporation of the technology tools made a significant impact on their learning. I can also look at standardized test scores to see if the technology and pedagogy utilized within this unit helped students achieve higher success on the content comprehension measures. I will also use interviews and classroom observations as evidence of whether my students are grasping these important skills. Students’ ability to talk intelligently about their shift in mindset, and to raise the level of conversation within their small groups should be evident while observing.
